Nutrition
Most nutrition advice aimed at young footballers assumes a supermarket and a supplement budget. Ours starts from what is already cooking at home.
Injera made from teff is a complete-protein grain and already the base of most meals here. We show players how much to eat before and after training rather than asking families to buy anything new.
Shiro, misir, beans, eggs and chicken cover what a growing player needs. We give portion guidance per age group so parents are not guessing.
Many of our players fast during Orthodox fasting seasons. We plan around it — timing the main meal, choosing fasting-friendly protein and adjusting session intensity — instead of pretending it is not happening.
Addis Ababa sits above 2,300 metres, where players lose more fluid than they expect and feel it later. We set simple drinking habits around sessions.
When the main meal lands after evening training, players arrive at sessions under-fuelled. We work out what to eat beforehand with what is already in the house.
We do not recommend protein powders or supplements for youth players. Food, sleep and consistency do the work, and we say so plainly to parents who are being sold otherwise.
General guidance for healthy young athletes, reviewed with our physiotherapy team. It is not medical advice — if a player has a health condition, speak to their doctor first.
Every two months
Every elite player receives a professional written report every two months, scored across four areas with an overall performance score, delivered through the student portal and reviewed with their coach.
First touch, passing range, finishing, weak-foot progress.
Decision making, positional understanding, reading the game.
Speed, endurance, strength for age, and recovery habits.
Focus, resilience, coachability and how they train when it is hard.
Each report shows the player's strengths and clear development priorities, so a player always knows what they are working on. Reports also decide trial selection — places are limited and chosen on level and progress.
